Have you heard the rumors yet? They are true! By the end of 2025, North Carolina will have adopted the eCourts system – which includes ePortal (https://portal-nc.tylertech.cloud/Portal/) and eFile&Serve (https://efilenc.tylertech.cloud/OfsEfsp/ui/landing) – across its 100 counties. The eCourts system is meant to transition legal case management from traditional paper files in courthouses to a virtual cloud storage system. This project will provide online accessibility to court records and ultimately increased access to justice to everyone in the state of North Carolina. Digital record keeping via eCourts eases the burden of limited physical space, courthouse traffic, and access to critical court records as long as you have an internet connection.
The North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts (NCAOC) have introduced kiosks in the courthouses of counties that have implemented eCourts that provide for scanning, printing, payment services, and online filing for anyone with limited online access to these services at home. In addition to online public access to their court documents virtually 24/7, the eCourts system centralizes a statewide financial management system to facilitate convenient and timely payments of fines and fees. The eCourts system also provides public safety systems to court officials and law enforcement to file and access pertinent information in time-sensitive legal matters, it provides judges and staff with remote access to electronic case files from anywhere, and it provides automatic or quicker responses to forms that are filled out incorrectly thereby reducing historic court delays due to such errors.
