Medical issues, as we age, are something that everyone will experience in some capacity; and such is life, accidents happen that no one can predict. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could make sure that there was always someone that could make sure our medical wishes were known, and could speak on your behalf in case you couldn’t speak for yourself?
Thankfully there is! By creating a “Health Care Power of Attorney” – also known as a “Medical Power of Attorney” or “healthcare proxy” – you can name someone that will speak on your behalf when there are medical decisions that need to be made and you cannot make them for yourself. When trying to decide who to name as your healthcare proxy, or “agent”, it is helpful to think of someone known to handle difficult/stressful situations well and is able to put your wishes above any personal feelings they may have about those decisions.
Your health care power of attorney can also instruct on things such as whether or not you want to be an organ donor; what type of life sustaining measures you want if needed; and whether or not you wish to be cremated.
Having a health care power of attorney in place ensures that your healthcare decisions remain in trusted hands, even when you are unable to make them yourself. By taking the time to choose the right person and clearly outlining your wishes, you provide peace of mind—not only for yourself but also for your loved ones. Planning ahead can make all the difference in ensuring that your voice is heard and your preferences are honored during life’s most challenging moments. If you have not yet created a health care power of attorney, now is the perfect time to take that important step toward protecting your future.
If you or somebody you know is in need of a Health Care Power of Attorney, our team at Modern Legal is here to help.
