Being named to Business North Carolina’s Legal Elite Hall of Fame in Family Law for 2026 is an honor I am still taking in. In a legal profession where recognition often comes quietly—if it comes at all—being acknowledged by peers across the state feels both deeply humbling and profoundly meaningful. Especially in Family Law, which is often marked by emotional fatigue and “gray area” decisions by legal professionals. I am grateful not just for the recognition, but for what it represents: years of hard work, tough cases, difficult conversations, and the steady commitment to show up for families when life is at its most uncertain. Awards are never earned in isolation, and this one is no exception. It reflects the trust of colleagues, the strength of a team, and the resilience of the clients who allow us to walk alongside them at critical moments.
Family law is not glamorous work, and it is rarely easy. It is emotionally demanding, high-stakes, and often misunderstood—because the courtroom drama people imagine from the television shows is nothing like the real, day-to-day weight families carry when their future feels unstable and uncertain. Many of our cases involve parents who are terrified of losing time with their children, spouses navigating the shock of divorce, or individuals trying to regain financial security after years of dependence or conflict. You cannot do this work well without compassion, preparation, and the humility to recognize that you are entering someone else’s most personal story. Leading a team of attorneys serving North Carolina and South Carolina has shown me, again and again, that excellence in family law is not about “winning”—it is about guiding people toward workable solutions and helping them reclaim stability, dignity, and peace.
At Modern Legal, with our home base in Charlotte, North Carolina, our mission reaches far beyond any single courthouse. When the law and your family collide, it is easy to feel overwhelmed—like you are speaking a language you never wanted to learn during a situation you never imagined. Our team exists to make that path clearer. We work to turn confusion into confidence, helplessness into empowerment, and frustration into action – because people deserve more than paperwork and procedures; they deserve clarity, advocacy, and direction. The most rewarding moments in my career are not the ones that make headlines—they are the quiet turning points: a parent exhaling after a fair custody schedule is put in place, a client realizing they have options, and a family moving forward in a healthier chapter.
That same commitment is what led us to create our podcast: Legal Lounge. The Legal Lounge podcast aims to dispel misinformation and downright bad legal information, because family law is flooded with myths, half-truths, and “advice” that can unintentionally cause harm. Our goal is simple: to empower anyone with questions about their family, their children, their finances, their marriage, and the law—and to offer not only information, but hope. As a team focused exclusively on family law matters, we want people to understand that even if the situation is painful, it is not powerless. There is often a solution; even if the solution presented is not ideal, there is usually a better solution than fear and uncertainty would suggest.
This Legal Elite Hall of Fame award gives me a chance to pause, reflect, and say “thank you”—to my team for their relentless dedication, to our clients for their courage, and to the colleagues who see value in our work. I feel a renewed purpose to keep raising the standard: to practice with integrity, to communicate with clarity, and to advocate with both strength and empathy regardless of the challenges that are presented. If you are walking through a family-law issue right now, I hope you hear this most of all: you are not alone, and you are not without options. My Modern Legal team and I will keep doing what we do—helping families move forward—one thoughtful conversation, one well-built strategy, and one hard-earned solution at a time.
