June brings the celebration of Fathers. Whether you are a father, step-father, grandfather, or father-in-law, Father’s Day symbolizes the appreciation of the oftentimes thankless job of being a dad. A lot of fathers are the unsung heroes of their families. Being a dad isn’t always pretty. Sometimes, the duty of a dad is giving a hard lesson that is not understood as it is given, but appreciated as it ages. Other times, being a dad is having fun with the kids like being a kid too. Whatever the task, dads who provide, care and love are essential components of a healthy home and are irreplaceable tools in the development of their children.
Fatherhood rewards its participants in countless ways. To his children, a great father is the testament of the kind of individual a child should aspire to be and surround themselves with. An admirable father provides direction and stability for everyone in the family. The feeling of doing all that you can while being an inspiring role model for your kids is one of the best rewards that could be felt in return.
If the next chapter of life gives dads the chance to get a “graduate degree” in fatherhood by making them grandfathers, then this new role provides more opportunities for influence and affection toward loved ones. Grandfathers are attentive, affectionate, and charismatic members of fatherhood, especially when they start with a story: “well, back in my day.” Grandfathers continue to give a father’s guidance as they coach their own kids on how to be a parent, but with the perspective of generational wisdom. Grandfathers give us insight on what they did wrong or what they would do differently when raising your own “little person.” Even in older age, grandfathers show us how to dig deep in the reserves to always find the energy to play with the little ones.
Every day we live our lives with purpose we are also fulfilling a “thank you” to the fathers that showed up and guided us. For Father’s Day, be sure to go that extra mile to acknowledge the sacrifices made and the guidance given by our fathers.
