Each June, we celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride Month in honor of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. Pride Month is a time for visibility, reflection, and celebration—a season filled with stories and imagery that honor the history and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community.

As with all things, time brings change. Whether in laws, relationships, or personal circumstances, these changes can impact our ability to protect ourselves and those we care about most. Taking proactive steps to put the right legal safeguards in place can offer peace of mind and ensure your wishes are honored, no matter what the future holds.

Here are a few essential areas to consider reviewing:

1. Estate Planning Documents

Legal protections are not automatically extended to all families in the same way. For same-sex couples—especially those who are unmarried—there may be additional legal hurdles when it comes to decision-making and inheritance. Establishing clear estate planning documents – such as a Healthcare Power of Attorney, Financial Power of Attorney, and Will – is critical. These documents can ensure your partner or chosen loved one has the legal authority to act on your behalf in medical or financial situations and that your belongings go where you intend.

2. Parent-Child Relationships

Building a family can look different for many in the LGBTQ+ community, often involving assisted reproduction, surrogacy, or adoption. It is important to legally document the relationship between a child and a non-biological parent. In many cases, securing legal recognition through adoption can offer added protection and clarity.

3. Title and Property Ownership

While not exclusive to LGBTQ+ individuals, how property is titled—especially when shared with a romantic partner—can significantly affect legal rights. Joint ownership, tenancy agreements, or survivorship clauses can all play a role in protecting your property interests and intended property conveyances. Reviewing title documents can help ensure your property is handled in a way that aligns with your goals and relationship.

We cannot predict the future, but we can prepare for it. Pride Month is a meaningful time to reflect on how far we’ve come—and to ensure we’re doing all we can to protect our families and our futures.
