Virtual is the WAY: Modernization of the North Carolina Judicial System

Modernization of the North Carolina Judicial System

Ten additional counties in North Carolina will be moving to the eCourts system in April 2024, including: Alamance, Chatham, Durham, Franklin, Granville, Guilford, Orange, Person, Vance, and Warren counties. As you may recall, Mecklenburg County moved to the eCourts system in the Fall of 2023.

The North Carolina Administrative Office of the Court (NCAOC) has been working to provide resources to those who interact with the legal system. NCcourts.gov has a variety of resources including tutorials, FAQs, and user guides which can be very beneficial if you are new to the process. The NCAOC is also offering online and in-person trainings.

Each individual can set up a person profile with the e-Courts system. Registered accounts will be able to file and serve pleadings and access the portal for important court dates. Rest assured though that certain types of legally protected personal information is not available on portal. However, an attorney of record, would be able to access that information.

To help streamline the process, attorneys and the public are encouraged to set up electronic accounts in these additional counties before April 29th, 2024. While there is a learning curve, the eCourts system is continuing to be a success here in Mecklenburg County as well as other North Carolina counties that have already adopted the system.

If you or someone you care about is looking for a Virtual Family Law Attorney to assist with the eCourts process in family law matters, our Modern Legal Team is here to help.

Please note: these educational materials are based on North Carolina law where our legal practice is based. While the insights may have wide applicability, readers should consult with an attorney regarding the specific laws in their state or country.
